Christ came into the world to save sinners!!

Looking at the first epistle to Timothy from the apostle Paul, the fifteenth verse of the first chapter, we read of the sole purpose of the coming of Christ into this world. There needs not to be an interpreter of this verse seeing it is plain even to the simplest of minds, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” It is a great wonder indeed that the Son of God would leave the heavens and its glorious countenance to come into this wretched earth to save wicked sinners and the vilest of men. Not only so but also to taste death on behalf of them that deserved to die so that they may be justified by faith in Him. He came to save sinners.

WHO IS A SINNER?

It is an interesting thing to give an answer to such a question as to who is a sinner. Who is a sinner? How can we define a sinner? A sinner can be called a sinner only when God says he is a sinner. God says in His word, “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23) and that “there is no one righteous, no not one” (Psalm 14:1-4) I believe beyond any shadow of doubt that God cannot lie. If God speaks from heaven through his servants, the prophets, stating that “there is none righteous” then we must know that indeed all have sinned. If all have sinned then it can be concluded that all are sinners and if all are sinners then my dear reader you and I are sinners. Yes we all are sinners for we have sinned against a True and a Holy God.

WHAT IS A SIN?

“Sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4) According to the scripture, anyone who transgress the law is committing a sin. Sin cannot exist without the law, because it is by the breaking of the law that a sin is born. The law of God is to love the LORD God with all heart, soul and strength and to love the neighbor as one’s self. These two laws are the fulfillment of the Ten Commandments which are God’s moral standards. In the Ten Commandments, the last six commandments are dealing with the relationship between a person and his neighbor. The first four commandments are dealing with a relationship between God and a human being.

The Ten Commandments

1. Have no other Gods before me (Idolatry – wicked imaginations, religions practices, false prophets etc.)
2. Make no image, any likeness of anything in heaven, earth or under the earth and do not bow down to
them (Idolatry – Materialism, love of money, self worship, love of cars, houses, etc.)
3. Hold not the name of the LORD your God in vain (blasphemy)
4. Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy (self indulgence)
5. Honor your mother and your father (disobedience to parents)
6. Do not kill (murder, hating, holding a grudge, cursing or swearing, name calling, child abortion)
7. Do not steal (theft)
8. Do not commitment adultery (sexual immorality)
9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbor (lying)
10. Do not covet (greed, lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh)

Miserable life of a sinner

No one have mastered the Ten Commandments, no, not one, because if one keeps nine and breaks one commandment out of ten, then he has broken all of them. Breaking the law of God have a consequence – DEATH – eternal separation from the creator. It is written, “the wages of sin is death” (Roman 6:23) and that “the soul that sins must die” (Ezekiel 18:4). He that despised the law of Moses was killed without mercy (Hebrews 10:28) So, all sinners must die according to the law and according to the justice system of God. All of them that transgress the law are owing to die, according to the scriptures. Death is the end deserved by all sinners. Yes, dear reader, you and I must die and be separated from our Creator the Holy and a true God forever. This is bad news for anyone to discover.

A sinner is the most miserable of all men. An enemy of God by nature from the day he/she was conceived and brought into this world. The life of a sinner is filled with misery and guilt, a slave to sin, having no one to deliver him/her from the hand of evil habits. The wise author of the book of Proverbs puts it rather profoundly when he says “The wicked flee when no man pursueth:” (Proverb 28:1). A sinner is wicked and has no peace, no hope and is running from nothing. He is fleeing from God and from all those who seek to offer him help. He resist the good counsel and he walks with pride in the way of destruction.

THE SAVIOR HAS COME

While the justness of God and His goodness alone can annihilate the whole sinful human race, his mercy made means for men to escape the wrath of God which is burning against the wicked. God, out of His infinite and unconditional love, gave his Son for us, as it is written, “…God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God sent his Son to save us. Paul writes “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners;” (1 Timothy 1:15). I marvel at this, God sent His only Son into the world to save His enemies, the sinners. It would have made great sense if God had sent His Son to save the righteous. For God to save sinners is completely beyond human contemplation. Christ explains this perfectly “…They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Mark 2:17). Christ came as a physician to resolve a matter pertaining to a serious deadly illness called sin. Those who have no sin would not need to be saved from sin and its consequences, only those who have sinned can benefit from the services of the Savior. The Son of God loved us enough to clear our debt by offering himself for us. God made His Son a sin offering for us, so that we can receive God’s righteousness through Him (2 Corinthians 5:21)

SALVATION IS A GIFT

Nothing in the world could be offered to God for our sins. Everything belongs to God, even our own selves, our bodies, EVERYTHING!!! We couldn’t offer anything to clear our debt. No good deed could undo the evil that has been committed against God. We have not merited salvation, it is simply a gift from God as it is written, “…God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ,( by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:4-9)
There it is my dear reader, say not “I am too much of a sinner and cannot be loved by God” for as sure as the sun rises from the East and sets in the West, so does God love you and have given you a word and ministry of reconciliation through Jesus Christ his Son (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Remember, Christ came into the world to save sinners!!
